MEET THE TEAM

The study is led by Dr Sarah Stock, Wellcome Trust Clinical Career Development Fellow, and managed by the Edinburgh Clinical Trials Unit (ECTU).

Dr Sarah Stock leads the observational data cohort component of the protocol and Professor Helen Cheyne and Professor Christine McCourt lead the qualitative component (qCHOICE).

Chief Investigator

Sarah Stock is Reader, Consultant and Subspecialist in Maternal and Fetal Medicine at the University of Edinburgh Usher Institute. She has research interests in preterm birth and stillbirth. With a laboratory science background, she now focuses on clinical trials and international data-driven studies. Her aim is to improve care options for pregnant women and develop strategies that reduce baby deaths and improve the health of children. Sarah is Chief investigator of the CHOICE study.

Professor Christine McCourt

Christine is Professor of Maternal and Child Health, School of Health Sciences, where she is research lead for the Centre for Research in Maternal and Child Health. Her key interests are in maternity and women’s health, with particular interests in institutions and service change and reform, on women’s experiences of childbirth and maternity care and in the culture and organisation of maternity care. She has worked over a number of years on applying anthropological theory and methodology to studying ‘western’ healthcare.

Professor Helen Cheyne

Professor Helen Cheyne is RCM (Scotland) Professor of Midwifery Research and Deputy Director of the Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health Professions Research Unit, based at the University of Stirling.  She has developed and led a successful programme of applied research in maternal and child health and wellbeing including large scale trials and national level evaluations of complex healthcare interventions. Her research interests include models of midwifery care, perinatal mental health, women’s care experiences and care during labour and birth.

Dr Cassandra Yuill

Dr Cassandra Yuill

Research Fellow

Dr Cassandra Yuill is a medical anthropologist, specializing in maternal health and maternity services in the United Kingdom. She has conducted research on adolescent nutrition and physical activity, parent-infant sleep, place of birth and midwifery-led care. She currently works as a Research Fellow on the CHOICE Study and is based in the Centre for Maternal and Child Health Research at City, University of London.

Dr Mairi Harkness

Research Fellow

Mairi is a Research Fellow working with the qCHOICE team, based at the Nursing Midwifery and Allied Health Professionals (NMAHP) Research Unit at the University of Stirling. Mairi is a registered midwife with broad experience across midwifery research and education and has a special interest in people’s experience of maternity care and midwives role in facilitating choice.

Maggie Reid

CHOICE Research Midwife

Maggie is a clinical specialist with Clevemed and registered midwife with a strong passion in midwifery to empower and equip clinicians and woman by removing the stigma of socio-demographics through working collaboratively, identifying gaps and inequalities in care provision and facilitating evolving evidence-based care with the woman and her family at the centre. Maggie is the CHOICE Research Midwife and is based at the Usher Institute, University of Edinburgh.

Fiona Wee

Trial Manager

Fiona has been a Trial Manager in Edinburgh Clinical Trials Unit (ECTU) for the past 10 years, and works with colleagues in ECTU on non-commercial research projects.   Before joining ECTU, Fiona worked as a Clinical Trials Monitor in both the commercial and non-commercial setting.  Throughout her time working in clinical research support, Fiona has worked on multiple research studies covering different therapeutic areas and enjoys working closely with research partners to deliver research projects.

STUDY GRANT CO-APPLICANTS

Our study co-applicants comprise clinicians with clinical and intrapartum trial expertise, and members with extensive experience in the use and analysis of routine clinical data in perinatal research, as well as domain knowledge in obstetrics, midwifery and neonatology.

We also have two lay co-applicants who bring different expertise to the project; through personal experience and through their work with a charity that helps to engage women from minority groups in healthcare research.

Clevermed Ltd, the provider of BadgerNet maternity records system, is providing technical expertise and facilitating data extracts from approved sites.
