Blocked, suspended or closed: what’s the difference?

The wording on the screen tells you a lot about how serious the problem is and how quickly it can be fixed.

  • Temporarily locked — usually a security measure after failed logins. It lifts on its own.
  • Suspended or restricted — the account is frozen while the operator checks something, such as your documents or a payment. You can normally still log in and contact support, but you cannot deposit, play or withdraw.
  • Closed — the account has been shut, either at your request, through self-exclusion, or because the casino has decided to end the relationship. Any eligible balance should be returned to you.

Whatever the label, the first step is the same: open 24/7 live chat from inside your account (or the Help Centre form if you cannot log in) and ask for the specific reason. Support may not share every detail of an investigation, but it should tell you what you need to do.

Every reason an account gets blocked

Under its UK licence the operator must know who you are, keep vulnerable people safe and prevent fraud. That is why most blocks fall into the categories below.

ReasonWhat it meansHow to resolve it
Failed or expired KYCYour identity, address or payment documents were not supplied, were rejected or have expiredUpload fresh, clear documents in Account → Verification — see our KYC verification guide
Age not verifiedThe automatic age check at signup could not confirm you are 18+Upload photo ID; play stays blocked until age is confirmed
Duplicate accountYour details match another account (yours or someone in your household)Tell support which account you want to keep; the duplicate is closed and any welcome bonus on it removed
GAMSTOP matchYour details match an active entry on the national self-exclusion registerThe account stays closed until your GAMSTOP period ends and you ask to reopen
Self-exclusionYou excluded yourself directly with the casinoCannot be lifted early; wait for the period to end
Suspected bonus abusePatterns such as multiple accounts, stake breaches while wagering or matched bettingProvide any information requested; bonus and bonus winnings may be removed if the breach is confirmed
ChargebackYou disputed a deposit with your bankUsually leads to closure; contact support to settle the disputed amount
Payment-method mismatchA card or e-wallet in someone else’s name, or one not verifiedRemove the method and verify one in your own name
Security lockFive failed login attemptsWait 30 minutes, then use “Forgot password” — see login problems
Affordability reviewYour net deposits reached a level that triggers financial checksProvide payslips or bank statements when asked
Restricted locationAccess from outside the UK or through a VPNTurn the VPN off; using one breaks the terms and can lead to closure

⚠️ Never open a second account

If your account is blocked, do not register again with different details. Duplicate accounts are a breach of the terms, are easily detected, and turn a fixable problem into a permanent closure.

How to appeal a suspension, step by step

Most suspensions are resolved within a few days if you supply what is asked for promptly and politely. Follow this order:

  1. Find out the exact reason. Ask live chat or send a Help Centre ticket. Note the date, time and agent name.
  2. Check your inbox and the Verification area. The casino often emails a request for documents; check spam folders too.
  3. Supply what is requested. Upload documents in Account → Verification rather than sending them by chat, so they attach to your file.
  4. Ask for a timeframe. Request an estimate for the review and a reference number.
  5. Follow up in writing. If nothing happens within the stated period, reply to the same ticket so the history stays in one place.
  6. Raise a formal complaint. If you disagree with the outcome, ask for your message to be logged as a complaint under the casino’s complaints procedure.
  7. Escalate to IBAS. After the final response, or after 8 weeks with no resolution, refer the dispute to IBAS (ibas-uk.com).

What happens to your balance

A block does not mean your money disappears. In general:

  • Real-money deposits and winnings stay in your account during a suspension and are paid out once the issue is resolved, subject to verification.
  • Bonus funds can be removed if the suspension relates to a confirmed breach of the bonus terms, such as exceeding the £5 maximum stake (£2 for 18–24-year-olds) while wagering, or holding more than one account.
  • On closure, any eligible cash balance should be returned to a verified payment method in your name. You may need to finish KYC before it is released.
  • After a chargeback, the disputed amount may be offset against your balance.

If the casino is withholding funds and you think that is wrong, ask for the specific term it is relying on. That clause is what an adjudicator will look at.

Self-exclusion vs suspension

The two can look the same on screen but are completely different. A suspension is the operator’s decision, normally temporary, and can be lifted once the issue is fixed. Self-exclusion is your decision to stop gambling for a set period (usually six months to five years). During it, the casino must not let you log in to play, must not send marketing, and must close or freeze the account. It cannot be lifted early, even if you ask. When the period ends, reopening requires a deliberate request and, often, a cooling-off period.

GAMSTOP

GAMSTOP is the free national self-exclusion scheme that covers every online casino licensed in Great Britain. If you have registered at gamstop.co.uk, Spinbob will block your account automatically for the length of your exclusion, and you cannot get around this by creating a new account. If you believe a match is a mistake (for example, a family member with similar details), contact GAMSTOP directly as well as the casino. Our responsible gambling page explains GAMSTOP and other tools in more detail.

Complaints and IBAS

UK-licensed casinos must run a written complaints process and give a final response within 8 weeks. Keep your messages factual: what happened, when, what you want and the reference numbers you have. If you are still unhappy, IBAS (Independent Betting Adjudication Service) will review the case free of charge and its decision is binding on the operator. You can check the casino’s licence by comparing the details in its site footer against the UK Gambling Commission’s public register.

Frequently asked questions

Will I lose my balance if my account is suspended?+

Not normally. A suspension freezes the account while an issue is reviewed; your real-money balance stays there. Bonus funds and winnings can be removed only if a breach of the bonus terms is confirmed.

How long does a suspension usually last?+

It depends on the reason. A security lock lifts after 30 minutes and a KYC hold usually clears within 24 to 72 hours of uploading valid documents. Affordability and duplicate-account reviews can take longer.

Can I ask the casino to reopen a self-excluded account early?+

No. Self-exclusion cannot be reversed before the period you chose ends. This protects you, and UK-licensed operators are not allowed to override it.

What if I think the block is unfair?+

Follow the casino's complaints process in writing. If you have no final answer within 8 weeks, or disagree with it, you can refer the dispute to IBAS for free.
